About This Quote

Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War”, written in 500 BC, is a classic work on military strategy. It is one of the earliest known books on military strategy and tactics. One of the chapters deals with the idea of “being still as the mountain”, or remaining motionless until an opportunity presents itself to strike. With this idea, Sun Tzu teaches that sometimes you have to wait for your enemy to attack before you can strike back.

This idea has been used throughout history, but was particularly popular in the United States during World War II. The German forces were often referred to as “Sleeping Tigers” because they would wait until American forces had moved into a position before attacking.
